Okawa beads and designs are produced by Work Of Our Hands, a not-for-profit project in Okahandja, Namibia. Okawa means “small treasure” in the Oshiwambo language and the beads are truly a labour of love with attention to detail at every one of the steps involved. Work Of Our Hands exists to empower marginalised women to take care of themselves as they learn jewellery and bead-making skills. They are located in Five Rand Camp, an informal settlement near Okahandja. The laughter and singing emanating from the pottery and jewellery studios fill each of their products with an extra taste of love and passion. When you buy Okawa jewellery, you aren’t just buying beautiful beads, you are empowering women to climb out of extreme poverty and to take charge of their own lives. The multistrand necklace is created from strands of small black glass beads and a hand painted ceramic bead.
